Group Music Classes

Participating in group activity is what music-making is all about. We offer a range of group music classes and music workshops to suit students of all abilities and musical styles. Our group classes allow students to develop their music skills beyond the individual and allow them to grow beyond the boundaries of their personal practice. Working with others helps to improve technical ability speed of learning, it broadens students’ understanding of musicality. It helps develop listening skills and increases confidence which can greatly improve students’ performance in critical situations such as grade exams and auditions, not to mention live gigs.

Our group music classes are open to any music students, you don’t have to be studying at Ebony & Ivory Music School to participate.

Orchestral Training

An hour of orchestral training structured to prepare you for the ABRSM and Trinity Guildhall exams. Experience the pleasure of playing with fellow musicians as part of an ensemble. Develop sight reading and orchestral playing skills, develop performance skills. Increase confidence and technical ability to ensure you get the best results in grade exams. To end the course, a magnificent end-of-term concert for orchestra will be held.

Junior Orchestra:

Open to students from beginner level to grade 4
Dates: April 22nd to July 15th
Day: Saturday 11:00 to 12:00

Senior Orchestra:

Open to students from grade 5 and up
Dates: April 23rd to July 9th
Day: Sunday 4:30 to 5:30

Cost: £10 per session.

Improvisation

Classes are suitable for young students from grade 1 to grade 8 level

Develop the skill and confidence needed to interact with music and musicians on the go! Master the ability to improvise so you can ace your grade exams!

Key Skills Include:
• Building scales and chords
• Recognising tonality
• Exploring leading tones and passing notes
• Examples taken from well known pieces of music as well as grade exam pieces
• Practical improvisation exercises and experience

Music Theory

Understanding music theory improves sight reading, helps memorise any score in much shorter time and refines composition skills. Even more, it will expand students’ musical horizons and enhance their music appreciation. For many students studying for grades it is a requirement to pass grade 5 music theory in order to progress to grade 6 and beyond.

Music theory classes will cover:

  • Time signatures
  • Key signatures
  • Scales (Major, minor harmonic, minor melodic and chromatic)
  • Clefs (treble, bass, octave treble, alto and tenor)
  • Intervals
  • Chords
  • Cadences
  • Transposition
  • SATB (writing out 4-part harmony)
  • Composition
  • Standard orchestral instruments general knowledge
  • Mock exam

Choir & Musicianship

Open to students from beginner level to grade 3.

Developing musicianship and listening skills in a friendly and supportive environment. Students will learn to sing together in a variety of styles including light classical, musical theatre and pop . They will develop their music theory skills towards achieving success in grade 3 music theory exams with ABRSM and Trinity boards.

Band Workshops

Our band workshops are a brilliant opportunity for budding musicians to cut their teeth playing with their peers. You’ll experience the fun and funk of playing with other people. You’ll learn new songs and styles, develop your listening skills, improve your playing, develop your musical expression and learn how to do a rock face.

We’ll be playing music in a wide variety of styles including rock, pop, soul, funk, R&B, reggae, hip-hop and more.

Our band workshops are open to young musicians of all abilities interested in playing popular styles. The workshops are open to singers, guitarists, pianists/keyboardists, bassists, drummers, horn players and any other rock & pop musicians.

Workshops take place during half term breaks.

Time: 10.00 to 13.00
Cost: £100 for three day course.
