Donna Bateman, soprano, is acclaimed for the versatility of her voice and her
communicative artistry. She has performed with English National Opera, Royal
Opera House – Linbury Studio, Birmingham Opera Company, Dutch National Opera,
Bregenz Festival and Theatre an der Wien in ensemble, and roles ranging from
Musetta, Susanna and Pamina to Rusalka and Cunegonde. A specialist of
contemporary music, she has created leading roles in world premieres by Jonathan
Dove, Judith Weir and Odaline de la Martinez. Concert highlights include Bernstein’s
Mass with the LSO and Mahler’s Symphony No. 8.
Alongside her performing career, she enjoys supporting singers of all ages through
teaching, delivering masterclasses and mentoring. She developed the educational
programme ‘Musical Buddies’ for schools and Children’s Centres in London. She is
also the recipient of the “Brent Citizen” award for her work and is thrilled to be a
mentor for ‘Lift Up Lambeth Voices’ for Pegasus Opera Company.
She draws on her knowledge and expertise from performing and singing opera,
classical, jazz, gospel and musical theatre to nurture and inspire her students. By
helping them express their own vocal personality, singers are encouraged to
cultivate conscious awareness of their own singing. She is able to support, guide and
collaborate with students of all ages and experiences and constantly develops her
knowledge by regularly attending courses and workshops on vocal pedagogy. She is
a member of AOTOS (Association of Teachers of Singing).
Whether singing for fun, or being coached for practical examinations, whether
developing understanding of music theory or to enjoy the wide-ranging health
benefits, her teaching is tailored to help students achieve their aims.
She was made an Associate of the Royal Academy of Music, London in 2011 for her
services to music.
Donna is a graduate of the Guildhall School of Music & Drama (GSMD), London,
attended on scholarship and was awarded the Charles Jacobs Award, GSMD
Singing Prize, James Anthony Horne Scholarship and an Associated Board
Scholarship. She graduated with Distinction from the Opera School at the Royal
Academy of Music (RAM), London, U.K.
